RE: Meeting Information - February 2004
Enclosed is the meeting notice for our Friday, February 6, 2004 Board of Directors’ meeting to be held at the Comins Senior Center, 4331 West First Street in downtown Comins, Michigan. Please refer to the enclosed directions and map. In addition to the tentative agenda and the minutes of the January 9th meeting, your packet contains the specifics on our one action item and other program information and updates.
The Head Start Transportation Regulations that were scheduled to go into effect on January 20th have been put on hold for 150 days for further review. We are not out of the woods yet on this issue, but there is hope that common sense and reason will prevail in the end. We will keep you posted!
Our only action item this month requests approval of recommendations for Disease Prevention Health Promotion Funding. The Regional Advisory Council endorsed these recommendations at their January 26th meeting.
Our Director’s Report this month will feature Carol Shafto, Planning and Evaluation Director, presenting the 2002-2003 ROMA Report. This report is the first attempt in NEMCSA’s 35 year history, to have an agency-wide report of program results. The Board Program Planning and Evaluation Committee along with Carol, Program Directors and other agency staff have put a tremendous amount of time and effort over the past several years to get us to this point. This process and outcomes will only get better as we continue to work on it. As it is, we are well ahead of most of the state and nation. Earlier this month, a copy of this report with Chairman Bill Hipwood’s memo was sent to you. Please bring it to the Board meeting Friday.
Next in your packet are a number of Client Services Program updates that were distributed as a part of a presentation made to Family Independence Agency County Directors and County Social Service Board members for our entire 11 county service area in Gaylord on January 22nd. Beth Storms, Crisis Prevention Program Coordinator, Kathy Goddard, Client Services Director and I spent more than one and one half hours in presentation and dialogue with those in attendance. Beth and Kathy did an outstanding job and the interchange was valuable for us as well as them. Bottom line: we are all working with reduced staff, fewer resources and greater needs. Good partners!
Immediately following are program updates for the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs. We are still recruiting eligible volunteers for both programs. After that is a copy of the City of Tawas City Resolution of Recognition for Volunteers Ed Cherry and Wayne Himes Week as a follow-up to their Tendercare recognition. Now that’s the American Spirit!
The next to last item in your packet is the copy of an article from the January 8th Bay City Times showing another of our cooperative efforts with the private sector. The result is that a long closed former elementary school has a new life as the new home for many scattered Head Start and Early Head classrooms. Excellent collaboration between Linda McGillis, Early Childhood Services Director and staff with Empire Properties owned by Terry and Diane Wager (landlords of our Head Start building on Germania). Win –win!
The last item in your packet is the February issue of Board and Administrator.
As usual, if you have any questions or require additional information about any of the items in this packet, please contact John Swise, Karen Godi, specific program staff or me. Hope all of you are coming to Comins. Please remember to bring your Board packet, nametag and include the odometer readings for your mileage reimbursement. The Board stipend form with space for claiming mileage reimbursement is included in your packet.
Friday, March 12 Board Meeting at B.J.’s Restaurant, Gaylord
Friday, April 2 Board Meeting at Huron Breeze Golf and Country Club, Au Gres
Friday, May 7 Board Meeting at Waters Edge Restaurant, Rogers City
If you are planning to bring your spouse or any other guest with you, please notify
Karen Godi, Executive Assistant in advance, so that we can arrange for adequate seating and meals. Thanks!
NOTE: We need to have odometer reading on mileage reimbursement forms to satisfy our audit requirements! Please check your readings before leaving and arrival at the meeting, and then double that for the estimate of the return trip. Thank you very much for your cooperation.
