Head Start Program Options

Home-Based Program Option

The home-based program is a unique program which offers families the opportunity to receive Head Start services in their home. This program provides support to families whose circumstances (schedule, transportation or location) might prevent them from participating in a structured classroom setting. The Head Start home visitor uses the home environment to help parents create rich learning experiences that build on everyday routines and support their child’s development and readiness for school.

  • "Pure" Home Base
This option operates September through May and provides a weekly home visit and two days/month socialization at a local Head Start center.

  • Combo
This option provides regular home visits by a teacher along with regularly scheduled days (1-2 days/week) in a local Head Start center. It is a great option for parents of children who may not yet be ready for a traditional preschool experience. The program runs September through May and is closed during holidays and staff in-service days.

Center-Based Program Option

The center-based program serves children in a Head Start center four/five days per week. Class sizes range from 15 – 20 children per class depending on the length of the program day and primary age of the children enrolled (fewer children if there are more three year olds, more children if they are more four year olds or if the program operates full day).

  • Part Day Center
This option operates either an AM or PM session for 3.5 hours per day, Monday through Thursday. The program runs September through May and is closed during holidays and staff in-service days.

  • Full Day / Full Year Center
The full day / full year option offers a center session of at least 6.25 hours per day, Monday through Friday, and is closed during holidays and staff in-service days. Operating months are September through mid-August.

  • Full Day / Part Year Center
The full day / part year option offers a center session of at least 6.25 hours per day, Monday through Thursday, and is closed during holidays and staff in-service days.
