Region 9 Area Agency on Aging Congratulates Volunteers

During National Volunteer Week 2011 (April 10-16) the Administration on Aging (AoA) will take time to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of volunteers who serve older Americans all across the nation.
These volunteers have remained the backbone of programs administered under the Older Americans Act.
"From its beginning AoA and its state and local networks have counted on volunteer support. Each year about ten million older people use Older Americans Act services, whose delivery largely depends upon the efforts of half a million volunteers." - Assistant Secretary for Aging, Kathy Greenlee
The Region 9 Area Agency on Aging, a division of NEMCSA, has six volunteers in its Long Term Care Ombudsman Program which service 22 nursing homes in our 12 county service area. They provide information and education to families and individuals about long term care facilities and services.
The Ombudsman investigates concerns and helps facility residents, families and friends to resolve problems dealing with quality care, residents’ rights and state regulating services. The Ombudsman and Ombudsman Volunteers act as a liaison between residents, care providers and state regulatory agencies. The Ombudsman provides educational programs and training in residents’ rights, guardianship, volunteer advocacy and long term care public benefits. A big thank you to our dedicated volunteers for their service!
If you would like more information about the Long Term Care Ombudsman program or are interested in volunteer opportunities in your community, please contact AAA’s Long Term Care Ombudsman, Sharon Greenhoe at (989) 358-4630.
