FREE SERVICE FOR LOW INCOME HOUSEHOLDS

You may qualify for:

Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency’s (NEMCSA) Weatherization Assistance Program

What is the Weatherization Assistance Program?

The Weatherization Assistance Program is an energy efficiency program that helps low income households manage the high cost of energy.  Weatherization work is performed on your home to help you stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.  These services are offered at no cost to eligible households by NEMCSA.  Not only will your weatherized home be more comfortable year round, you could save significantly on future energy bills.  The average household saves an estimated $400 -$500 per year on energy after the home is weatherized.

This program is funded in part by the State of Michigan.

How is the Weatherization Program conducted?

NEMCSA uses professionally trained staff that completes an individual computerized energy audit and uses advanced diagnostic equipment to identify energy saving strategies in dwellings, and mobile home units.  The most cost effective and efficient weatherization measures and those that are essential for health and safety are then performed, including but not limited to: insulation of attic, floor, walls, caulking, weather-stripping, window and door repair, installation of compact fluorescent light bulbs, and a furnace clean and check.

Who is eligible?

You may qualify for assistance.  Whether you own or rent, or live in a mobile home, you can apply for assistance.  If you rent, the landlord must sign an agreement before weatherization services can be performed.  Preference is given to the elderly (over 60), persons with disabilities, and families with children.

If you receive Supplemental Security Income, State Disability Assistance or FIP you are automatically eligible.  You may also be eligible for assistance if your income falls within the federally established poverty income guidelines shown in the table on the Weatherization Program Application Requirements information page.

The application process

The process begins with a pre-application form called a referral form.  When this form is received in the NEMCSA office, your name is placed on a waiting list for your county.  When your name comes up on this list, you will be sent an application requesting more information as outlined in the Program Application Requirements.  The approximate wait time can be one month to one year, so please be patient.
