The Alpena Montmorency Alcona (AMA) Educational Service District (ESD) is excited to enroll, in partnership with NEMCSA Head Start, for the 2021-2022 School Year

After a year of record-low enrollment in preschool programs across Michigan, including within Northeast Michigan, many educators are hopeful about the next school year and excited to welcome families back to preschool classrooms. Preschool registration is now open across AMA counties for children who are 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2021.

The AMA region provides an array of quality preschool options to meet family needs and budgets including FREE, tuition-based and special education preschool programs available through the intermediate school district and NEMCSA Head Start partners. The two free preschool programs, Head Start for 3-4 year-olds and Great Start Readiness Program for 4-year-olds, are nationally ranked programs and available to families who meet income and need criteria.

Did you know preschool is a vitally important time in a child’s life because 90% of brain development happens by age 5? During the pandemic, many families paused enrollment in child care and preschool. Daily life may have changed and a child’s development continues. It’s important to continue building on those language, social and emotional skills. We want families to know that we are here to answer questions and provide support they may need as a result of the pandemic.  Most importantly we want them to know that Preschool is a vital step in any child’s future and many families qualify for FREE or low cost preschool. We encourage everyone regardless of income to apply.  Children with special needs and families whose primary home language is not English are encouraged to apply as well.

To register, please call the AMA ESD at 989-354-3101. Families looking for tuition-based preschool can begin their search by visiting www.greatstarttoquality.org.
